Wedding Statistics in Jakarta

37% of Young People Respond “Wedding Costs are Between IDR 10 Million and IDR 50 Million”

According to a survey conducted by research firm Populix, 37% of millennial and Gen Z respondents answered that their estimated wedding costs would be between IDR 10 million (approx. USD 600) and IDR 50 million (approx. USD 3,000) (conversion rate: 1 USD = 16,000 IDR).

The second most common answer was IDR 50 million (approx. USD 3,000) to IDR 100 million (approx. USD 6,000) with 35% of respondents. Following this were IDR 100 million to IDR 200 million (approx. USD 6,000 to USD 12,000) with 12%, IDR 200 million to IDR 400 million (approx. USD 12,000 to USD 24,000) with 7%, less than IDR 10 million (under USD 600) with 6%, and over IDR 400 million (over USD 24,000) with 3%.

Compared to the average wedding cost in Tokyo, which is around JPY 3 million (approx. USD 18,500), wedding expenses in Indonesia appear significantly cheaper. However, considering that 6% spend less than IDR 10 million (under USD 600) and 10% spend more than IDR 200 million (over USD 12,000), it might be more accurate to say, “it depends on the person.”

In response to the question “Who bears the wedding costs?” in the same survey, the majority answered either themselves (80%) or shared with their partner (61%). This was followed by their own parents (31%) and their partner’s parents (28%).

Multipurpose Halls and Other Venues Popular for Wedding Receptions

Popular venues for wedding receptions include ballrooms, function rooms, and multipurpose halls (44%), followed by parks and gardens (30%), and hotels (10%). The estimated number of guests ranges from 50 to 100 people (30%), 100 to 300 people (34%), and 300 to 500 people (16%).

Although many people in Indonesia still hold wedding ceremonies at home, recently it has become popular, especially in urban areas, to rent local multipurpose halls, restaurants, and hotels for weddings.

Receptions are generally held either in the afternoon on the day of the ceremony with close relatives or later on a weekend. They are often buffet-style standing parties. At parties held at homes or local rental venues, it is common for relatives and neighbors to handle the cooking and serving.

Precautions when conducting an on-site inspection in Indonesia

Some visitors consider, "My primary purpose is to conduct maintenance work at the factory, but the visa application process appears cumbersome. I will simply enter on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) and carry out the work discreetly."

However, there have been numerous cases where entering without the appropriate visa for the intended activities has resulted in significant legal and operational issues. It is therefore strongly advised to obtain the correct visa prior to travel.

Here are the types of visas and their purposes.

Wedding Ceremonies in Jakarta Through Videos

Jakarta Mega Wedding Festival

Wedding fairs and consultation events are frequently held at event venues and hotels in Jakarta. Visitors can directly ask questions or seek consultations at each booth about venues, attire, invitations, photography, decorations, and other arrangements. Events such as concerts and prize lotteries are also held at these venues, and the videos convey the lively atmosphere.

At Indonesian weddings, brides often wear traditional dresses from their hometowns. However, recently it has become trendy to arrange traditional attire in a Western wedding dress style. Western-style white wedding dresses are also popular and appear in these videos. Some brides also change outfits between the ceremony and the reception or during the reception itself.

Weddings at Hotels in Jakarta

Buffet-style receptions with either standing or free-seating arrangements are the mainstream. However, at luxury hotels, assigned seating may be available, with costs being around USD 60 per guest.

Here is an example of a wedding held at a 3-star hotel in Jakarta.

Towards the end of the video, an Islamic-style wedding (vow ceremony) is shown, where the bride and groom exchange vows before witnesses. Male guests in traditional Indonesian batik shirts and female guests in traditional kebaya attire watch over the ceremony. The bride and groom wear traditional attire, but the venue decorations are quite modern and stylish.

Incident Report from On-Site Inspection
  • Taxi Troubles

    IT company

We had planned to use a ride-hailing app for local transportation; however, due to the combination of the morning rush hour and heavy rain, no taxis were available even after waiting for over 30 minutes. In the end, we arranged a motorcycle taxi on short notice, but heavy traffic caused further delays. As a result, we were forced to postpone one of the two business meetings scheduled for the morning.

  • Interpreter Issues

    Cosmetics manufacturer

While traveling from central Jakarta to a client in the suburbs, our freelance local interpreter suddenly canceled. Since English was not widely understood in the area, we were unable to fully convey the finer nuances of our business discussions, which was highly regrettable. We came to realize that it would have been better to engage a professional interpreter through a reputable agency rather than relying on a low-cost freelancer.
