Basic Information about Yogyakarta

Location, Area, and Population

Source: Google Maps

Yogyakarta, known as an ancient capital of Indonesia, is located almost in the center of the long and narrow Java Island and faces the southern coastline. Administratively, it is designated as the Special Region of Yogyakarta (Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta), commonly abbreviated as “Jogja” or “DIY.” The capital city of the region is Yogyakarta City.

  • Special Region of Yogyakarta: Area of 3,170.7 km², Population: 4,179,333 (2025)
  • Yogyakarta City: Area of 32.8 km², Population: 466,950 (2025, projected)

The Special Region of Yogyakarta and Yogyakarta City

The Special Region of Yogyakarta consists of four regencies and one city. In Indonesia, “regency (Kabupaten)” and “city (Kota)” are considered equivalent administrative units—cities are not subordinate to regencies. Thus, the Special Region of Yogyakarta is divided into five administrative areas.

The capital, Yogyakarta City, houses a royal palace where the royal family resides. It also features the bustling shopping street “Malioboro Street” and the National Museum, making it a popular tourist destination. Additionally, it is known as a “student city” due to the presence of many prominent educational institutions such as Gadjah Mada University, one of Indonesia’s top universities.

Climate

Although Java Island is long from east to west, it is relatively short from north to south, resulting in minimal climate variation across flatlands. Yogyakarta is situated at a low elevation of approximately 50 to 200 meters above sea level and shares a tropical climate similar to that of Jakarta.

The average annual temperature in 2023 was 26.3°C, which is not significantly different from the Indonesian national average of 27.2°C.

Notably, the region is surrounded by mountains and the sea, contributing to higher humidity levels. Additionally, Yogyakarta experiences relatively stable temperatures throughout the year. The climate is characterized by two distinct seasons: the rainy season from around October to March and the dry season from around April to September.

Transportation

Railways

Long-Distance Trains
The central terminal station in Yogyakarta, Tugu Station (Yogyakarta Station), serves as a hub for intercity long-distance trains. It is the arrival station for travelers from various locations across Java Island, including Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya.

Additionally, the Joglosemarkerto Line, which loops through Central Java Province and Yogyakarta, also stops here. This line connects 20 stations including Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, Tegal, and Purwokerto, offering two seating classes.

Airport Rail Link
The airport rail link connects Yogyakarta International Airport, located along the coastline, with Tugu Station in Yogyakarta City. The travel time between the airport and Tugu Station is 39 minutes on regular trains and 35 minutes on express trains.

Commuter Trains (KRL)
Operated by the state-owned railway company KAI, the Commuter Line Yogyakarta connects Tugu Station with Palur Station in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java Province. This line stops at key locations such as Brambanan Station, near the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple, and various stations in the ancient city of Surakarta (Solo), which predates Yogyakarta as a historical capital.

Buses

The Special Region of Yogyakarta operates two types of bus routes under the Trans Jogja system. With more than 20 routes, this network provides access to major stations, educational institutions, and tourist destinations throughout the region. Note that the previously operated Teman Bus service was discontinued at the end of 2024, and its routes were integrated into Trans Jogja.

Other Modes of Transportation

In Yogyakarta City and around popular tourist spots, visitors can use three-wheeled pedicabs called becak, which have seating in front of the driver’s bicycle, or horse-drawn carriages known as andong or delman. Although more expensive than public transportation, these options are recommended for short-distance travel or sightseeing.

Precautions when conducting an on-site inspection in Indonesia

Some visitors consider, "My primary purpose is to conduct maintenance work at the factory, but the visa application process appears cumbersome. I will simply enter on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) and carry out the work discreetly."

However, there have been numerous cases where entering without the appropriate visa for the intended activities has resulted in significant legal and operational issues. It is therefore strongly advised to obtain the correct visa prior to travel.

Here are the types of visas and their purposes.

How to Travel from Japan to Yogyakarta

From Japan to Jakarta / By Air

Yogyakarta has two airports: Yogyakarta International Airport and Adisutjipto Airport. Yogyakarta International Airport, which opened in 2020, has taken over the functions of Adisutjipto Airport and is now the main airport serving the region.

However, as of now, international flights from Yogyakarta International Airport are limited to routes to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Therefore, travelers typically access Yogyakarta via connecting flights operated by carriers such as AirAsia or Singapore Airlines, or by transferring to a domestic flight at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in the suburbs of Jakarta.

Direct flights from Japan to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport are available from Narita and Haneda airports, with a flight duration of approximately 8 hours. From other airports such as Kansai International Airport, travelers will need to use connecting flights (as of April 2025).

From Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) to Yogyakarta

By Train
Travelers can take long-distance trains that cross Java Island from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
Departure stations in Jakarta include Gambir Station and Pasar Senen Station in Central Jakarta, and Jatinegara Station in East Jakarta. The fastest services take approximately 6 hours. Fares vary depending on the train and class of seat: around IDR 350,000 (approx. USD 21.70) for economy class, and around IDR 600,000 (approx. USD 37.20) for executive class.

To reach these stations from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport:

  • First, take the KAI airport rail link to Manggarai Station (approx. 55 minutes).
  • From there, to Jatinegara Station: take the Cikarang Line (toward Bekasi) for approx. 6 minutes.
  • To Pasar Senen Station: transfer at Jatinegara to the Cikarang Line (toward Kampung Bandan) for about 10 minutes.
  • Gambir Station is best accessed by express bus (Damri) or taxi.

By Bus
There are no direct buses from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Yogyakarta. However, many long-distance buses depart from areas near the airport and from within Jakarta city. Fares typically range from IDR 200,000 to 400,000 (approx. USD 12.40–24.80), with travel times of 10–13 hours.

Incident Report from On-Site Inspection
  • Taxi Troubles

    IT company

We had planned to use a ride-hailing app for local transportation; however, due to the combination of the morning rush hour and heavy rain, no taxis were available even after waiting for over 30 minutes. In the end, we arranged a motorcycle taxi on short notice, but heavy traffic caused further delays. As a result, we were forced to postpone one of the two business meetings scheduled for the morning.

  • Interpreter Issues

    Cosmetics manufacturer

While traveling from central Jakarta to a client in the suburbs, our freelance local interpreter suddenly canceled. Since English was not widely understood in the area, we were unable to fully convey the finer nuances of our business discussions, which was highly regrettable. We came to realize that it would have been better to engage a professional interpreter through a reputable agency rather than relying on a low-cost freelancer.
