Location, Area, and Population
Bogor is located south of Jakarta, with Depok City situated between them. Bogor Regency stretches widely from east to west, bordering Bekasi Regency of West Java Province to the east and Tangerang Regency of Banten Province to the west.
- Bogor Regency: Area of approximately 2,992 km²; population of approximately 5.6823 million (as of 2023)
- Bogor City: Area of approximately 118.5 km²; population of approximately 1.0707 million (as of 2023)
The population of Bogor Regency has increased by 6.6% from 5.33 million in 2014. The population of Bogor City has grown by 3.9% from 1.03 million during the same period.
Bogor Regency and Bogor City
Bogor comprises two administrative units: Bogor Regency and Bogor City, both under West Java Province.
In Indonesia, a “Regency” (Kabupaten) and a “City” (Kota) are equal administrative units. In the case of Bogor, Bogor Regency surrounds Bogor City geographically, but it is not administratively subordinate to the city; rather, both are independently governed under West Java Province.
The urban area of Bogor City features numerous shopping malls and business hotels. In contrast, the mountainous areas of Bogor Regency are home to many resort hotels, villas, and camping sites.

Climate
Bogor Regency contains mountain ranges with elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. In higher-altitude areas, temperatures can drop below 20°C during mornings and evenings.
The climate in the lowland areas is tropical, similar to that of Jakarta and other regions, with an average annual temperature of approximately 26.5°C. The year is divided into two seasons: the rainy season from around October to March and the dry season from around April to September. Although rain is common across the region during the rainy season, Bogor is particularly known for its heavy rainfall.

Transportation
Train
From Bogor Station in Bogor City, the commuter rail service KRL Commuter Line connects to Jakarta. However, much of Bogor Regency is mountainous, and therefore, railway infrastructure is limited in those areas.
Bus
Bogor City
The city operates a local bus service called Bis Trans Metro Pakuan (formerly known as BisKita Trans Pakuan), which covers the entire Bogor City area.
Bogor Regency
Since December 2024, Bogor Regency has launched an EV bus service connecting the districts of Bojong Gede (near the border with Depok City) and Sentul.
More broadly, shared-route minibuses called Angkot operate throughout the region. While Angkot routes can be difficult to navigate for first-time users, the flexibility of boarding and alighting anywhere along the route makes them a popular mode of transport for local residents.

Major Industries in Bogor
Agriculture
Bogor Regency produces a diverse range of agricultural products, including vegetables such as cassava and carrots; fruits such as mangoes and durians; as well as tea leaves and coffee beans. Livestock farming is also thriving in the region.
Bogor is also a popular tourist destination, and agritourism, which combines agriculture with tourism, has been attracting attention. The area offers large-scale agritourism facilities where visitors can enjoy experiences such as rice planting, fruit picking, and fieldwork. These facilities cater not only to individual tourists but also to school excursions and group tours.
Manufacturing
Bogor is home to two major industrial parks: Bogor Industrial Park and Sentul Industrial Park.
Bogor Industrial Park is located along a main highway near the border with Depok City, housing factories from various industries such as food processing, building materials, and industrial goods.
Sentul Industrial Park, located in the Sentul district—which has recently gained popularity as a residential and leisure area—is currently under development, with completion targeted within 2025. Many companies have already established factories and warehouses in the area, and there is ongoing construction of residential areas, commercial facilities, and hotels. With convenient highway access, the district also offers excellent connectivity to Jakarta.
Food Processing Industry
Among the various manufacturing sectors, food processing is particularly notable in Bogor due to its robust agricultural base. Prominent food manufacturers with production facilities in Bogor include PT Nutrifood Indonesia and PT Cisarua Mountain Dairy Tbk.
Cisarua Mountain Dairy, known for its popular “Cimory” brand of milk and yogurt, also operates restaurants and leisure facilities in Bogor.
Tourism Industry
Known as the “City of Rain,” Bogor boasts a cool climate and lush natural surroundings, which support a thriving tourism industry. Major attractions include the well-known Bogor Botanical Gardens and Safari Park, as well as numerous parks, pools, and amusement parks.
The mountainous areas feature many resort hotels, villas, and glamping and camping sites, offering convenient weekend getaway options for residents from the greater Jakarta area. The demand for dining establishments catering to tourists is also high.
In addition, there are many leisure facilities and businesses offering activities such as trekking, rafting, and camping for both individual visitors and corporate or group events.
Real Estate Industry
Due to its proximity to Jakarta, Bogor has become a popular choice for both residential and recreational developments. The availability of large tracts of developable land has spurred the construction of numerous residential communities and resort facilities. In tandem with population growth, business districts featuring office spaces and retail outlets are also emerging throughout the region.

Considerations When Entering the Bogor Market
While Bogor offers proximity to Jakarta, ample land availability, and a vibrant industrial landscape, companies should also be mindful of the following points when entering the market.
Traffic Congestion
Traffic congestion in Bogor is especially well-known in the Puncak area, a mountainous region with many leisure facilities. On weekends and holidays, “one-way” traffic control is implemented in this area—vehicles are restricted to one direction for a certain period while the opposing flow is halted. Depending on the timing, this can result in much longer travel times than anticipated.
In recent years, traffic congestion has also increased in Sentul, likely due to the growing residential population and the opening of additional leisure facilities.
As with any location in Indonesia, it is essential to fully understand the surrounding traffic conditions when establishing a business presence.
Environmental Considerations
Given Bogor’s rich natural environment, it is crucial to prioritize environmental considerations when undertaking regional development or factory construction.
A recent example is the temporary suspension of the Lido Special Economic Zone (KEK Lido) construction project by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry due to environmental concerns. If all required environmental permits are not secured, administrative penalties such as site closures or fines may be imposed.
Conversely, companies that demonstrate strong environmental stewardship can enhance their reputation within the local community. For instance, Bogor Industrial Park encourages companies to adopt environmentally friendly technologies in their manufacturing processes. It is important to align business operations with the policies set forth by local governments, industrial parks, and business districts to ensure sustainable development.
Severe Rainfall and Natural Disasters
Bogor is one of the rainiest areas in Indonesia. Due to the region’s mountainous terrain and underdeveloped infrastructure in some areas, the rainy season often brings heavy rainfall and floods, causing annual damage.
Although new residential, industrial, and business districts are typically developed in flood-resistant areas, floods in surrounding regions can still disrupt logistics and impact employee commuting and daily life. When considering expansion into Bogor, companies are advised to assess not only the immediate vicinity of their facilities but also broader regional conditions to ensure preparedness.
Trends and Competition
Bogor is a natural next target for brands that have already expanded in Jakarta. With ongoing development and a growing population of younger residents, major brands from across Indonesia are actively opening stores in Bogor.
In general, food & beverage and apparel brands that succeed in Jakarta often expand into suburban cities like Bogor and Depok, and then further into regional cities—a trend that holds true for foreign brands as well. Companies looking to increase their number of outlets must constantly monitor the competitive landscape and emerging trends.

Developing an Entry Strategy Based on Local Characteristics
