Indonesia’s Business Single e-Visa (C Visa) is an electronic visa (e-Visa) that allows foreign nationals to enter the country for short-term, specific business-related activities. The C Visa consists of various subcategories—such as C2, C11, C17, C18, and C20—each with its own permitted activities and conditions of stay depending on the specific visa code.

- Length of Stay: Typically allows a single entry stay of up to 60 days, although this may vary slightly depending on the visa type.

- Extension Limitations: Most C Visas are either non-extendable or have strict conditions for extension, making them unsuitable for long-term stays.
Precautions when conducting an on-site inspection in Indonesia
Some visitors consider, "My primary purpose is to conduct maintenance work at the factory, but the visa application process appears cumbersome. I will simply enter on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) and carry out the work discreetly."
However, there have been numerous cases where entering without the appropriate visa for the intended activities has resulted in significant legal and operational issues. It is therefore strongly advised to obtain the correct visa prior to travel.
Here are the types of visas and their purposes.

Taxi Troubles
IT company
We had planned to use a ride-hailing app for local transportation; however, due to the combination of the morning rush hour and heavy rain, no taxis were available even after waiting for over 30 minutes. In the end, we arranged a motorcycle taxi on short notice, but heavy traffic caused further delays. As a result, we were forced to postpone one of the two business meetings scheduled for the morning.

Interpreter Issues
Cosmetics manufacturer
While traveling from central Jakarta to a client in the suburbs, our freelance local interpreter suddenly canceled. Since English was not widely understood in the area, we were unable to fully convey the finer nuances of our business discussions, which was highly regrettable. We came to realize that it would have been better to engage a professional interpreter through a reputable agency rather than relying on a low-cost freelancer.

Cases Where Problems Occurred in the Past
Conducting Sales Activities on a C2 Visa → Treated as Illegal Employment
- Overview: A foreign national entered Indonesia on a C2 visa (intended for meetings and exhibitions) and accompanied a local company to introduce products and negotiate prices.
- Issue: The Indonesian authorities determined that this was effectively a sales activity and classified it as employment.
- Result: Visa was revoked → deportation and blacklisting (entry banned for more than 6 months).
Engineer Performing On-Site Work with a C11 Visa → Penalized for Working Without a Work Visa
- Overview: A Japanese engineer traveled on a C11 visa to support factory setup and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Issue: Since the work involved hands-on tasks like machinery installation and repairs, it was considered labor.
- Result: The company was fined, and the individual was ordered to leave Indonesia.
Frequent Travel Using a C17 Visa → Entry Denied
- Overview: A sales representative frequently traveled in and out of Indonesia using a C17 visa within a short period.
- Issue: Immigration officials judged the activity as long-term business operations, effectively qualifying as employment.
- Result: Visa application denied, refused entry at the airport, and immediate repatriation.
Employee Training on a C18 Visa Was Actually Supervisory Work
- Overview: A foreign national stayed in Indonesia under the pretext of “in-house training” but regularly directed local Indonesian staff.
- Issue: Authorities saw the individual not as a “trainee” but rather in the role of an “instructor/manager.”
- Result: The company received a warning, which affected future visa approvals.
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
-
What is the difference between a C2 visa and a C11 visa?
-
The C2 visa is intended for passive participation activities such as meetings, exhibitions, and seminars, while the C11 visa is suited for more hands-on technical support, including quality control, technical discussions, and factory inspections.
-
How long can I stay with a C visa?
-
Typically, a C visa allows a single entry with a stay of up to 60 days. Extensions are generally not permitted, but in some cases, they may be approved depending on the visa type or discretion of the immigration office.
-
Can I work and receive payment under this visa?
-
No, you cannot. C visas are meant for short-term stays only, and any paid activities or employment are strictly prohibited. If you will be receiving payment or engaging in ongoing business operations, a work visa is required.
-
Can I leave and re-enter Indonesia with the same visa?
-
No. C visas are single-entry, meaning the visa becomes invalid once you leave Indonesia. You will need to apply for a new visa if you wish to re-enter.
-
Is it allowed to give instructions to local staff?
-
Generally, no. Giving instructions, training, or managing local staff is likely to be regarded as employment, which requires a work visa. Attending training as a “participant” is allowed, but acting as a “trainer” carries risk and must be approached with caution.
-
What questions will be asked at the airport?
-
At the airport, you may be asked about your purpose of visit, destination, and type of work. Providing vague answers or giving responses that contradict your visa type (especially with VOA) may result in denial of entry, so it is important to align your explanation in advance with your sponsor company.
