Indonesian Coral Reefs in Numbers
Indonesia’s Coral Reef Area is 51,020 km², Accounting for 18% of the World’s Coral Reefs
Indonesia has the largest coral reef area in the world. According to the 2024 report by World Population Review, Indonesia’s coral reefs cover 51,020 km², representing 18% of the world’s total coral reef area. By country, Australia ranks second, the Philippines third, and France fourth.
The area encompassing the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands, as well as parts of Malaysia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea, is known as the “Coral Triangle.” This is one of the most diverse habitats in the world for corals and the organisms that live among them. Indonesia’s coral reefs make up 65% of the Coral Triangle.

Precautions when conducting an on-site inspection in Indonesia
Some visitors consider, "My primary purpose is to conduct maintenance work at the factory, but the visa application process appears cumbersome. I will simply enter on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) and carry out the work discreetly."
However, there have been numerous cases where entering without the appropriate visa for the intended activities has resulted in significant legal and operational issues. It is therefore strongly advised to obtain the correct visa prior to travel.
Here are the types of visas and their purposes.

“New Bali” – Wakatobi National Park with Stunning Coral Reefs
Located in Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Wakatobi is renowned for its stunning coral reefs. The unique name “Wakatobi” is derived from the initials of its four main islands: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. Wakatobi National Park, which encompasses these islands, is one of Indonesia’s largest marine protected areas, spanning approximately 14,000 km².
Wakatobi is a dream destination for divers. Venturing out by boat, visitors are greeted by crystal-clear blue waters, over 750 species of coral, and more than 940 species of marine life.
The tourism industry in Wakatobi has been developing rapidly, with many resorts and travel agencies offering package tours. These packages often include activities such as diving, snorkeling, and boating, along with opportunities to experience traditional village culture.
Wakatobi is one of the “10 New Balis,” selected by the Indonesian government as a priority area for tourism development and is attracting increasing attention in recent years.
Anessa Indonesia’s Coral Planting Initiative
In 2023, Anessa Indonesia collaborated with environmental organization Seasoldier to plant 150 coral fragments in the waters of Nusa Penida, Bali. Six months later, reports indicated that the planted corals were growing steadily at the same rate as natural corals.
Anessa Indonesia continues its environmental protection initiative called “SUNstainable,” one aspect of which is coral reef conservation. In addition to planting corals, the company considers environmental impacts in its product manufacturing, offering waterproof sunscreen that does not dissolve in seawater. This is important because certain chemicals in sunscreen are known to harm coral growth.
In a TikTok post reporting on the coral planting, Anessa stated: “Anessa’s commitment to coral reefs is as strong as its SPF protection. Choosing Anessa is the first step in caring for the planet. We protect your skin and protect the coral reefs.”

Taxi Troubles
IT company
We had planned to use a ride-hailing app for local transportation; however, due to the combination of the morning rush hour and heavy rain, no taxis were available even after waiting for over 30 minutes. In the end, we arranged a motorcycle taxi on short notice, but heavy traffic caused further delays. As a result, we were forced to postpone one of the two business meetings scheduled for the morning.

Interpreter Issues
Cosmetics manufacturer
While traveling from central Jakarta to a client in the suburbs, our freelance local interpreter suddenly canceled. Since English was not widely understood in the area, we were unable to fully convey the finer nuances of our business discussions, which was highly regrettable. We came to realize that it would have been better to engage a professional interpreter through a reputable agency rather than relying on a low-cost freelancer.
Coral Reef Decline and Conservation Efforts
Due to global warming and coastal development, coral reefs are declining worldwide, and Indonesia is no exception.
According to 2019 monitoring by Indonesia’s Research Center for Oceanography (RCO), only 30% of Indonesia’s coral reefs have live coral cover exceeding 50%, while 33.8% are classified as being in particularly poor condition. Those in poor condition are at risk of disappearing in the near future.
The government and stakeholders are working to attract tourists using coral reefs while simultaneously engaging in conservation activities. These efforts are crucial not only as a tourism resource but also for protecting ecosystems, safeguarding coastlines, and ensuring the sustainability of local fisheries.
Indonesia stretches across a vast east-west expanse, with diverse climates and topographies. Accordingly, the characteristics and conditions of coral reefs vary greatly, requiring tailored approaches for each region.
